Sheila works mainly in clay, exploring notions of colour and patterns on three dimensional objects. Functional and sculptural ceramic pieces express a humorous interplay. Works are traditionally vessel form. Many possess human and animal characteristics. Their layered drawn and painted surfaces imply narrative themes. Other designs on bowls dishes and platters can be read as abstract paintings combining translucent washes of vibrant colours with geometric patterns.

More recently lustre paintings have been introduced into Sheila's works having been inspired by recent trip to many the waterfalls in the antipodes.
